Kirkland FC continued to improve on their recent run of good form on a beautiful day against Federal Way. The Goats were gearing up to get redemption against Federal Way after drawing 1-1 on April 3rd. The Goats got off to a slow start and conceded after 20 minutes. Kirkland FC started to put some pressure on Federal Way as the half went on and eventually made a break through. Jake Morse forced a turnover after a corner that set up a shot for Sam Carpenter who buried the ball in the bottom left corner. This goal was Carpenter's second goal vs Federal Way this season. Quickly after, Jake Morse earned a free kick on the left side of the 18 yard box. Adam Reckard stepped up to take the kick and delivered a beautiful ball to the far post. Owen Gortner got his head to it and helped it on past the keeper to put Kirkland FC up 2-1 right before half.
The second half started out better than the first and the Goats had the better of the possession. After about 30 minutes into the second half Kirkland went up 3-1 courtesy of Leon Bormann. Sergio Palomino played a ball in behind the defense to Jake Morse, who slotted the ball across the six yard box to Bormann who smashed it home. Less than a minute after going up 3-1, Federal Way came back and brought back the score line 3-2. The rest of the game saw a collection of fouls and half chances from both sides.
Bormann has been on fire since joining the Goats. After seven league games and one Super Cup game, Bormann has scored four goals and has two assists. Bormann attributes a lot of his success to being a position that fits him well. “I have played as a wing back or left back for most of my college years. Having move up to the left of a front three I have been finding myself in a lot of dangerous positions. The team has done an amazing job of getting me the ball in great positions to score and I wouldn't be where I am at without them,” stated Bormann. One of those teammates who has been linking up well with Leon has been Jake Morse. Either playing on the opposite side of the front three or as a number 10, Morse has provided 3 assists this season and two of those have been to Bormann in the last two league games.
Head coach Josi Evangelista had the following to say after the match;
"It was a good win today. Credit to our players for coming back from behind after a slow start to the game. We had chances to finish off the game in the second half and in the end we deserved the three points.”
Since taking over, Evangelista has accumulated a 2-1-3 record and have moved from 7th position in the league to 5th. Under his supervision the Goats also won their first Washington State Super Cup match in a thrilling penalty shoot out vs WWPL 2 team Seattle Umoja.
